Using the right keywords is essential in order to be found online even if you don’t want to pay for ads. However, finding the right keywords can sometimes be a bit difficult – especially when your customers use other keywords than you do.
An example for that is the whole beauty, cosmetics, or grooming sector. In general, customers search less for “shaving gel” or “volume shampoo”. People have questions and problems. They search for answers e.g., “how to I get more volume” “razor burn after shaving”. Think about your buyer persona and what he or she would search for.
Now you’re in the right mind-set. Let’s go on and give you some tips how you can find other keywords.
Hidden gem, mostly forgotten, but try and search how your customer would search and see what Google suggests you. Another good point is, you will see your competitors and what keywords they focus on.
Google AdWords Keyword Planner Tool
The general approach should be the keyword planner. Here you can find keyword ideas and the tool also shows you the search volume for the keywords (and also the suggested bid if you want to do ads).
Other free tools
- SEM Rush is a great tool to check your competitors’ website to see which keywords they use for organic and paid search. You also get a preview of an ad.
- Ubersuggest is another really good one. At first it looks pretty useless if you use it for a keyword area that you are familiar with, but if you start using it for areas that you are unaware of (like I was for men shaving) it can help you find other possibilities.
- Just recently I discovered keywordtool.io. It is very similar to ubersuggest, I think the design is a bit more user friendly though.
Another possibility is always – try and ask your customers what they would search for if they were looking for your product/servicel. A good way to ask is from broad to narrow. Start with a general sector and problems within this sector and then narrow it down to your product. This way can give you ideas that you haven't thought of.
Try to understand your customers is the most important.
